Seven Spanish Popular Songs  is a collection of traditional songs adapted for voice and piano by the Spanish composer Manuel de Falla in 1914 . ¹ Over time it has become Falla’s most orchestrated composition and also the most frequently performed in performances where typical Spanish folklore songs are performed. The set was dedicated to Madame Ida Godebska. 2 The style and origin of the songs are quite different. They are from different parts of Spain: an  Asturian from the Asturias region in the north; the seguidilla , a type of flamenco , from Murcia , in the southeast, a “Jota” from Aragón in the northeast. “Nana” is a lullaby and “Polo” a song that expresses the wild desire for revenge for a lover. All the texts deal with love or the process of courtship, sometimes playfully, other times seriously, or tragically. The first song, for example, clearly alludes to the importance of virginity to a girl’s value in the marriage market. ³​ The lullaby is about the result of love.
